The UW-Madison Police Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our main headquarters is at 1429 Monroe Street—across from Camp Randall Stadium, near the intersection of Monroe Street and Randall Avenue. Public parking is available at metered spots. View our location on Google Maps.


Patch requests: the UW–Madison Police Department only gives patches to verified sworn police officers — we cannot make any exceptions. To request a UWPD patch, send proof of your law enforcement affiliation, why you would like a patch, and your mailing address to police@uwpd.wisc.edu.

Police and security work can be challenging. Sometimes officers or other staff provide services that are requested and appreciated — and on other occasions, officers interact with citizens in very stressful situations or hold people accountable for violations of the law. COMPLAINTS

Complaints are taken very seriously by the UW–Madison Police Department and are viewed as opportunities to learn, correct problems, and improve our service to the community.

During the Contact
If you believe a UW–Madison Police or Security officer has acted improperly during your contact, you may respectfully request to speak with an on-duty supervisor, if available, or you may request the officer’s name and badge number. Please do not get involved in a confrontation with the officer, as you will address your complaint with a UWPD supervisor.

After the Contact
If you are the aggrieved person or a witness to an incident where you believe a UW–Madison Police Department staff person acted inappropriately, you are encouraged to speak with a UWPD supervisor. Please call 608-264-2677 and request to speak with a supervisor. Complaints can often be resolved at this level by providing a better understanding of the issue in a timely manner.

  • Unfounded: when the investigation reveals that the alleged action did not occur.
  • Inconclusive: where the investigation fails to uncover conclusive evidence in support or denial of the alleged action.
  • Exonerated: where the investigation reveals that the alleged action did occur and was within department policy and state law and was appropriate.
  • Sustained: when the investigation reveals that the alleged action did occur and was not within department policy or state law or was inappropriate.
