The UW-Madison Police Department has arrested a Madison man on several charges – including disorderly conduct with a hate crime enhancer – following an altercation at a residence hall early Thursday morning.

On Thursday, September 29, 2022 at approximately 12:30am, UWPD officers responded to Witte Hall for a report of an individual who made threatening statements. According to a witness, the suspect – later identified as David C. Clash-Miller, 20, Madison – caused a disturbance in a meeting room in the residence hall. During the incident, Clash-Miller made threatening statements to an individual as well as comments about the person’s race.

As UWPD officers arrived, Clash-Miller ran from the scene. Officers chased him for several blocks and ultimately took him into custody. While being arrested, Clash-Miller threatened officers several times.

A day earlier, on Tuesday, September 27, UWPD responded to Witte Hall for a report of the suspect making threatening statements to a House Fellow. During that investigation, UWPD officers learned of yet another altercation with the suspect – on Monday, September 26, he had made threatening statements to a group of students playing pool. The students felt they were targeted because they were speaking Spanish.

Clash-Miller was arrested and booked into the Dane County Jail on several outstanding warrants. UWPD also referred numerous charges, including two counts of disorderly conduct with a hate crime enhancer, an additional count of disorderly conduct, eight counts of bail jumping, one count of resisting arrest, and one count of threats to a law enforcement officer.

Clash-Miller is not affiliated with UW-Madison.
