  • Incident date: November 1, 2017, 11:26 am
  • Incident type: Information
  • Location/address: UW-Madison Law School Library - 975 Bascom Mall

On November 1st, 2017 at 11:26 AM, the UW-Madison Police Department received a phone call from a person at the UW-Madison Law School Library (975 Bascom Mall on the UW-Madison campus) who stated they had been told that an individual was armed with a gun in the Law School Library. Officers were dispatched to the area and evacuated the Law School Library building during their initial response.

A perimeter was established and multiple officers on scene searched and cleared the Law School Library building.

WiscAlerts were sent out advising people to avoid the area while officers searched the building.

At 12:05 PM, officers completed the search and determined that there was no one inside the building with a weapon and no threat to campus exists. There are no confirmed reports or statements of a weapon actually being observed in the Law School Library.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available for release at this time.

Our #1 priority is the safety of our campus community. We will not hesitate to issue WiscAlerts when we need members of our community to take action to protect themselves.

While no active threat to campus exists, UWPD has developed an “Active Shooter Response Guide” to educate our campus community on Officer response protocols, an educational video, and safety tips. The guide can be found at the following link: http://uwpd.wisc.edu/staying-safe/active-shooter/
