Shortly after midnight Tuesday morning, UW-Madison Police officers were dispatched to Memorial Library on the UW Campus to for a report of a man sleeping in a room. Library staff asked that police do a welfare check on the man.
UWPD responded, woke the man, and identified him as James Charles, 32, from Madison. Once identified, officers learned Charles had a warrant for his arrest. When officers attempted to take Charles into custody, he resisted and refused multiple commands to stop resisting. Eventually, one of our officers deployed pepper spray and safely gained control of Charles.
Charles was taken into custody without injury and booked into the Dane County Jail for the warrant, as well as charges for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
