UWPD Investigating Body in Lake Mendota

The UW–Madison Police Department is investigating the discovery of a body in Lake Mendota early this morning.

At approximately 6:10 a.m., a passerby contacted UWPD dispatchers after spotting what appeared to be a body roughly 50 feet offshore near the Memorial Union. UWPD officers responded to the scene and were assisted by Madison Fire, who recovered the individual from the water. The person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates the individual is a middle-aged male. At this time, there are no signs of foul play.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the individual’s identity and additional details following their initial investigation and after family have been notified.
