Student Arrested for Video Recording in Restroom
- Case number: 26-0245
- Incident date: February 15, 2026, 12:00 am
- Incident type: Multiple Offenses
- Location/address: UW-Madison Residence Hall
On Sunday, February 15, 2026, UWPD officers responded to a UW-Madison residence hall following a report that an individual was recording videos of others in a restroom.
Several victims shared similar accounts: while inside a restroom stall, an unknown individual in an adjacent stall would drop a cell phone on the floor beneath the divider, with the camera lens facing upward, while the victim was using the restroom. In each instance, the individual retrieved the phone after a few seconds.
One victim, who had experienced this twice before earlier that day, grabbed the phone when it occurred a third time and observed that it was actively recording. He also reported seeing numerous similar recordings on the device. The incidents were reported to House Fellows, who then contacted UWPD.
Officers arrested Braden Berndt, 19, of Berlin, Wisconsin. He was booked into the Dane County Jail on three counts of disorderly conduct and three counts of capturing an image depicting nudity without consent. Berndt is a resident of the residence hall.
The incidents remain under investigation, and there may be additional victims in this case. Anyone who believes they may be a victim is encouraged to contact UWPD at 608-264-2677.
