UWPD Drone Team

The UWPD drone team was created in 2023 and is made up of both sworn police officers as well as civilian staff. All operators are FAA Part 107 certified, trained in the safe and lawful operation of unmanned aircraft systems, and required to follow UWPD Policy, FAA regulations, and applicable laws.

UWPD owns several drones for exterior and interior use. These drones can record video, and most are equipped with thermal imaging, which is commonly used in our operations. All UWPD drone flights, whether for training or real-world operations, are documented and recorded in an internal tracking system to ensure accountability, policy compliance, and proper oversight.

Our unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones, are used to enhance public safety, support emergency response, and improve police officer safety. It’s important for the community to understand both how these critical tools are used and how they are not.

What UWPD drones are used for:

Drones are a force multiplier, allowing officers to respond more effectively and safely to a wide range of situations. UWPD drones may be deployed for:

  • Search & rescue operations, including missing or endangered persons
  • Emergency response, such as locating individuals who have fallen through ice on Lake Mendota
  • Criminal investigations, from locating suspects who flee or during search warrants
  • Large event monitoring, such as game days at Camp Randall Stadium
  • Situational awareness, during critical incidents to help protect officers and the public

What UWPD drones are NOT used for:

  • Not used for random surveillance activities
  • Do not monitor private areas where individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy without proper legal authorization (such as a search warrant)
  • Are not used to discriminate against any individual or group based on their race, age, religion, gender or any other protected characteristic
  • Do not carry weapons of any kind
