Man Arrested for Attempted Sexual Assault and Weapons Offense at UW Health University Hospital

UPDATE 6/18/2026 – 9:50 a.m.: Upon further investigation, the UWPD will be recommending the additional charges of false imprisonment and disorderly conduct to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Coney remains in custody and there continues to be no ongoing threat to community safety.
The UW-Madison Police Department has arrested a 43-year-old man following an attempted sexual assault and weapons violation at University Hospital on Wednesday morning.
On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at approximately 8:40 a.m., UWPD officers responded to University Hospital for a report of an individual armed with a knife. Law enforcement dispatchers quickly located the suspect on camera and officers arrested the suspect nearby within minutes. Investigation revealed the suspect had entered several restrooms in the hospital, where he attempted to sexually assault a hospital employee. The victim escaped and alerted staff and UWPD.
The suspect, Dontel Coney, 43, of Madison, was arrested on tentative charges of first-degree sexual assault, carrying a concealed knife, felony bail jumping, misdemeanor bail jumping, and a probation violation. The suspect is not affiliated with UW-Madison or UW Health, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
