CRIME WARNING: UWPD Investigates 4th Degree Sexual Assault at SAC

  • Incident date: March 9, 2016, 6:00 pm
  • Incident type: Sexual Assault
  • Location/address: Student Activity Center - 333 East Campus Mall

3/15/16 UPDATE: On Monday, March 14, UWPD arrested Fabian Vital, 23, of Madison for the alleged sexual assault. He was booked into the Dane County Jail for 4th degree sexual assault.

On Wednesday, March 9 at approximately 6:00 p.m., a man approached a male student on the 4th level of the Student Activity Center (333 East Campus Mall) and asked the student for help.

The man led the student to the men’s restroom and sexually propositioned the student. The student said no, and the man then grabbed the student’s genitals over the top of his clothing without consent. The student immediately called 911.

The suspect is described as an Asian male, early 20s, 5’ 3” tall, 140 pounds, short black hair, medium build, last seen wearing a dark blue A&F hoodie, jeans, and white sneakers.

The assault was reported to the UW-Madison Police Department, which is currently investigating the case. If you have any information about the incident, please call UWPD at 608-264-2677.

Sexual assault is never the fault of the victim. While nothing is failsafe, here are some suggestions everyone should consider:

  • Make sure you have consent. Consent is a clear and freely given yes, not the absence of a no.
  • When someone says no, you must respect that person’s decision.
  • Be active in supporting a safe and respectful community. If you see others engaging in disrespectful, inappropriate, or illegal actions, speak up and get involved, or contact someone else to assist.
  • If you witness something that doesn’t feel right, you can help by getting involved. Check-in and ask, “Hey, do you know this person?” or, “Are you OK?”
