Kohl Center Shelter in Place Tuesday Evening

On Tuesday evening near the conclusion of the UW Men’s Basketball game at the Kohl Center, the City of Madison Police Department made a request that fans inside the Kohl Center shelter in place as they searched a nearby area in their ongoing investigation of a shooting on State Street earlier in the day.

There was never a threat to campus or to fans at the Kohl Center, which is why an emergency alert was not issued. The main concern was thousands of fans exiting the arena and possibly interfering with the police investigation. Therefore, we communicated directly with fans at the Kohl Center, requesting that they stay inside until the police investigation was complete.

By 10:40 p.m., fans were told they could exit the Kohl Center. As always, we appreciate everyone’s cooperation and understanding while the situation unfolded.
