Lab Employee Arrested for Reckless Endangerment

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, UW-Madison Police Department officers, along with the Madison Fire Department Hazardous Incident Team, responded to a campus research lab for a report of an unknown odor coming from items in an office. Evidence was collected and later tested positive for the presence of a chemical.

On Friday evening, following an investigation and a confession, a lab employee was arrested. Makoto Kuroda, 41, of Madison, was arrested on tentative charges of second-degree reckless endangering safety and booked into the Dane County Jail.

The incident appears to be isolated and there is no known threat to public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be filed.
