Madison Man Arrested Following Battery on Library Mall

On Saturday, May 11, 2024, at approximately 7:20 p.m., UWPD officers responded to Library Mall for a report of a battery.

A victim reported to UWPD that an unknown man, later identified as Robert A. Shipman, 48, Madison, physically assaulted a speaker during a peaceful demonstration. Shipman was reportedly yelling at the group and was visibly agitated – he then approached the victim and punched him twice in the back of the head. He then went to a different person and struck them in the face and on the shoulder. Both victims declined medical treatment at the scene.

UWPD quickly identified Shipman as the suspect – he was located and arrested without incident later that evening. Shipman was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of battery and disorderly conduct. Shipman is not affiliated with UW-Madison.
