Middleton Man Arrested Following Assault on Four UWPD Officers
- Case number: 24-0648
- Incident date: April 27, 2024, 8:00 pm
- Incident type: Multiple Offenses
- Location/address: Memorial Library
On Saturday, April 29, 2024, at approximately 8:00 pm, UWPD officers were dispatched to Memorial Library for a report of an intoxicated man in the lobby. When officers arrived, they found the man – later identified as Benjamin Bougie, 19, of Middleton – seated in the corner of the lobby, substantially intoxicated. Bougie was slurring his speech and yelling at officers who were attempting to de-escalate the situation. It was determined Bougie was incapacitated, and he would be transported to a hospital for treatment.
Once at the hospital, Bougie became even more agitated and uncooperative, struggling with officers as he was removed from the squad. This behavior escalated inside the hospital, as Bougie continued to resist and yell. Once he was medically cleared and ready for transport to the Dane County Jail, Bougie became even more violent, thrashing and kicking, forcing officers to the ground to try and stabilize him. In the process, four UWPD officers were injured. Bougie was eventually safely detained and transported to the jail.
Bougie, who is not affiliated with UW-Madison, was booked into the jail on four counts of battery to a law enforcement officer and one count of resisting. He was also cited for third offense underage drinking and possession of a fake ID.
