Student Arrested for Second Degree Sexual Assault, Other Charges

On Thursday, November 10 at approximately 8:00pm, the UW-Madison Police Department responded to a UW-Madison resident hall for a report of sexual assault.
The victim told UWPD officers that the suspect, Alec Shiva, 18, strangled her, held her against her will, and sexually assaulted her in his room. The victim was eventually able to break free and call police.
Meanwhile, a bystander who noticed the victim in distress confronted Shiva about the sexual assault – Shiva became combative, broke a mirror and other UW property in his room, and tried to punch the bystander. He was able to deflect the punch, escape the situation, and return to the victim to continue assisting her.
Alec Shiva was arrested for second degree sexual assault, battery, false imprisonment, strangulation, disorderly conduct, and criminal damage to property. He was booked into the Dane County Jail.
Based on the severity of the allegations and the potential impact on the campus community, the university is disclosing that this student is under emergency suspension from the institution.
