An 18-year-old man is in police custody after a robbery overnight near Gilman Street and North Henry Street.

The Madison Police Department says a 34-year-old robbery victim was found unconscious at the scene, shortly before 1:00 a.m., after he was assaulted by 18-year-old Aleque J. Guerra. Guerra stole the victim’s wallet and phone, and ran away from the scene.

A quick thinking witness immediately called 911, and officers were on the scene within seconds. A UW-Madison police officer spotted the suspect running west on Gorham Street — the officer shined a spotlight on Guerra, who gave up the chase. He was taken into custody by Madison Police.

Guerra was arrested for Robbery, Substantial Battery, Resisting, Bail Jumping, and Underage Person Possess or Consume Off Licensed Premises.

The robbery victim was transported to the hospital with a facial fracture and a brain bleed — the injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
