UWPD Investigating Body Found in Lake Mendota

On Friday, August 19, 2022, at approximately 6:10 a.m., a passerby called 911 to report what appeared to be a body floating in Lake Mendota near Alumni Park and the Memorial Union. Officers from the UW-Madison Police Department immediately responded to the scene — along with our partners from the City of Madison Police Department, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Shorewood Hills Police Department, and Madison Fire.

The individual, a male, was pulled from the water and was pronounced dead at the scene. While the incident remains under investigation, we do not suspect the incident involved foul play.

Our partners at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office will share additional details about the man’s identity following an autopsy and notification of family.
