UWPD Investigating Campus Burglaries
- Incident date: February 11, 2018, 1:30 pm
- Incident type: Burglary
- Location/address: Sellery Hall
On Sunday, February 11, 2018, sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., a burglary reportedly occurred inside a resident’s room at Sellery Hall. As many as four suspects could be involved, and UWPD has reason to believe there may be more than one victim. It’s believed the suspects may have entered Witte Hall as well later in the day.
It appears the suspects gained access to the residential floors of Sellery by “piggybacking” from other students. We do not believe the suspect(s) involved are UW-Madison students.
The UW-Madison Police Department is actively investigating this case. Anyone with information is urged to contact UWPD at (608) 264-2677. Please carefully check your room – if something is missing and you believe you also may be a victim, please call UWPD.
Nothing is failsafe, but here are some crime prevention suggestions everyone should consider:
- Always be aware of your surroundings.
- Be aware of suspicious activity such an unknown person trying to open various doors to see if they are unlocked.
- Lock your door – even if you’re going to be gone for a short period of time. It takes just seconds for someone to steal your property.
- Never allow others to piggyback their way into a secure area of a residence hall or elevator. A simple statement like, “I’m sorry, I don’t recognize you – please scan your ID or use your key” goes a long way in keeping our community safe.
