Madison Man Charged with Racist Graffiti Incidents

The UW-Madison Police Department has referred charges against a Madison man for a series of racist graffiti incidents on and off the UW-Madison campus last week.

John Englert, 71, of Madison was charged by UWPD for graffiti and bail jumping. UWPD officers recognized Englert on security cameras in the campus area around the time of the graffiti incidents. He’s accused of tagging multiple buildings on September 3, 2020, with racist and hateful messages. City security cameras captured Englert tagging State Street area buildings with similar messages found on campus buildings.

Englert had already booked into the Dane County Jail — he was arrested on similar charges by the City of Madison Police Department.
