Suspect Arrested for Nine Vehicle Break-ins at Parking Ramp & Lot near UW Hospital

  • Incident type: Theft
  • Location/address: University Hospital Ramp (Lot 75) & University Bay Drive Parking Lot (Lot 76)

The UW-Madison Police Department has made an arrest, following a string of break-ins at the University Hospital Parking Ramp (Lot 76) and University Bay Drive Parking Lot (Lot 76).

Since late-July, at least eight vehicles in the hospital parking ramp and a nearby parking lot were broken into – some vehicles even had windows and windshields broken, in addition to valuables stolen.

Over the course of the investigation, and with the help of some local businesses with security cameras, UWPD officers and detectives were able to identify a primary suspect – Brittany L. Townsend, 28, of Madison. She was arrested last Thursday for one of the break-ins, and earlier this week she confessed to eight more. Townsend faces nine counts of criminal damage to property and nine counts of theft.

A number of the items stolen by Townsend have been recovered – UWPD is working with victims to return the items to their rightful owners.
