Shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 25, the UW-Madison Police Department received a report of a possible child abuse situation in the Eagle Heights community – on the northwest end of the UW-Madison campus. The 13-year-old victim had called UWPD and reported he was assaulted and strangled by his mother’s boyfriend.
Officers responded and found the boy with significant injuries to his face and arms, and pain in his chest and abdomen. The boy was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect was nowhere to be found.
Later Sunday evening, based on a description, a UWPD Security Officer noticed the suspect driving on campus. UWPD officers responded and arrested Mark Shawanokasic, 37, of Madison. He was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of child abuse, disorderly conduct, and strangulation. Mr. Shawanokasic is not affiliated with the UW.
UWPD’s investigation is ongoing.
