UWPD, MFD Respond to Possible Fire at Engineering Centers Building
- Incident date: January 21, 2019, 1:30 pm
- Incident type: Fire
- Location/address: Engineering Centers Building
On Monday, January 21 at approximately 1:30 p.m., the UW-Madison Police Department responded to a possible fire at the Engineering Centers Building, 1550 Engineering Drive. Once on scene, alarms could be heard and smoke was visible. Several WiscAlerts were sent to campus throughout the afternoon, advising everyone to stay away from the area.
A sweep by UWPD and the Madison Fire revealed there was not an active fire. Electrical and plumbing experts arrived on scene and helped discover that the smoke came from a large oven in the basement of the building. The problem was contained — however, the building sustained some damage, as fire sprinklers were activated during the incident.
Police and fire cleared the scene at around 4:30 p.m. — the building will remain closed overnight for clean-up. Should more time be needed for clean-up, the dean’s office at the College of Engineering will alert those students, faculty, and staff who are impacted.
