Staying informed is an important part of staying safe. At UW-Madison, we are focused on your safety and ensuring a productive learning and working environment for all. When an emergency occurs on campus, we alert campus-goers and the public via our alerting systems as described below.
While it is our goal to keep campus-goers informed of the emergencies that occur, there are unique situations in which we may not be able to divulge all information. Examples include (but are not limited to) situations where providing information could impede or compromise a law enforcement investigation, where we do not have enough information to issue an alert, or where the incident occurred off campus and we are working with nearby law enforcement agencies to keep the public informed.
Lastly, there may be a time in which we do not have all of the information, but the urgency of the situation warrants an immediate notification. One example of this is an active attacker incident on campus. In this situation, we will send an initial WiscAlert that may not detail an exact location. However, there will be follow-up alerts soon after that will provide additional details.
