The UW-Madison Police Department has made an arrest connected to a string of theft cases on campus.
Since the start of the fall semester, UWPD has taken reports on more than a dozen theft cases at the Camp Randal Sports Center – more commonly referred to as the Shell. In many of the cases, suspects gained access to the Shell by asking a random student entering the building to “sponsor” them, in order to gain entry to the facility. Once inside, the suspects would steal items like cash, cell phones, laptops, and other valuables.
On Tuesday, December 4, UWPD officers located and arrested Samuel F. Spencer, 21, of Madison. Spencer was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, operating after revocation, tampering with security devices, and possession of marijuana.
It’s believed Spencer, who has no UW-Madison affiliation, is a known suspect in other theft cases in the City of Madison and across Dane County. Other charges from partner police agencies may be forthcoming.
