UWPD Responds to Racist Text Messages

The UW-Madison Police Department is aware of reports that Black UW-Madison students have received racist text messages as part of a nationwide wave of messages that began on Thursday.

The messages contain references to slavery and have targeted Black individuals and students at universities across the country. The messages are unsolicited, harassing, and racist in nature.

Multiple state and federal agencies, including the FBI and Federal Communications Commission (FCC), are investigating. Currently, no information suggests that the threats are credible.

We are committed to the safety of the UW–Madison campus and community, and we take all reports seriously. If you ever feel unsafe or threatened, call UWPD at (608) 264-2677. If it’s an emergency, call 911.

Students may fill out a Harassment, Discrimination & Bias report to receive support from the Office of Student Assistance and Support (formerly the Dean of Students Office).

If you need additional support or for general safety information:

  • UWPD encourages all students and employees to contact them immediately by calling 911 if they experience safety concerns on campus.
  • SAFEWalk is a free walking companionship service available to all students, faculty, staff, and UW visitors.
