The UWPD Lake Rescue & Safety Unit has wrapped up its 116th season of service on Lake Mendota. This year, our team provided aid to more than 400 people on the water and supported partner agencies, including the Madison Fire Department and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. We’re proud of our crew for their quick response times and their dedication to preparing for any situation.
If you plan to spend time on the lake during the colder months, please remember that water temperatures will continue to drop. Always wear a life jacket—it significantly increases your chances of survival, especially in cold water. And a reminder: Lake Rescue & Safety does not monitor ice conditions. No ice is ever 100% safe, even in a winter forecasted to be colder than average. If you choose to go out on the ice, check with local bait shops or fishing groups for the most up-to-date information. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also offers ice safety tips here.
Our team is already planning for a return to service in April 2026, and we’re excited to share that the unit will be upgrading to an Emergency Medical Responder service. This designation will allow our staff to receive additional medical training and equipment, allowing us to provide even more support to people on the lake.
If you’re interested in joining the team, keep an eye out for job postings this winter—we typically hire seasonal employees every year. For more information, please visit our website.
From all of us at UWPD Lake Rescue & Safety, have a great winter season, and we’ll see you next spring!
