“Lake Rescue 2025 Season Is Open”
As the winter recedes and temperatures continue to rise, we want people to be safe in their adventures on Lake Mendota. If you are considering going out on the lake, especially this spring, please consider the following safety tips:
- Remember that the water warms up slower than the air. Even if it is 75° F outside, the water may only be in the 50s. Falling into cold water can cause rapid hypothermia and loss of coordination and strength, making it hard to rescue yourself. Always tell others when you plan to be on the water and when you’ll be done.
- Always wear your life jacket. A life jacket is only good if you are wearing it. Every member of your group should have a fitting life jacket in good condition. Consider attaching a whistle to the life jacket in the event you fall in the water and need to get someone’s attention
- Always utilize the engine cutoff switch lanyard when using a motorboat. This will stop your motor if you fall out of the boat. An uncontrolled, running motor can cause serious harm to you and those around you.
- Plan ahead. Wisconsin springs bring significant storms. Always check the weather report before heading out on the water. Enjoy everything summer offers and always take the appropriate safety precautions. Be sure to check our webpage for weather information on Lake Mendota. We look forward to serving the community for the 116th year in a row.
